The Gilbreths went on to do much important work on industrial efficiency and became particularly interested in the problem of fatigue and how to reduce it. 24 From simple motion study they proceeded to study the design of working spaces and how these could be reconfigured to reduce the physical impacts of work on employees.
Two nearly contemporary books, Hugo Münsterberg's Psychology and Industrial Efficiency and Lillian Gilbreth's The Psychology of Management, show two different aspects of the relationship between psychology and management.40 Münsterberg, a Ger- man experimental psychologist who taught at Harvard for a number of years, was inter- ested in how psychology could be used to influence workers and their attitudes to work, and also its potential uses in vocational training.

Included in his more than twenty books are translations of all of Taylor's major works, a biography of Taylor and an intriguing book on the state of development of Japanese industry and management.56 It was perhaps inevitable that Japan, still in the throes of rapid industrialisation and suffering a scarcity of raw resources, should become interested in industrial efficiency.
